The NZR H Class locomotive was first used in New Zealand in 1875. It was designed to run on the Fell system of traction, which uses a smooth center rail laid between the tracks of a normal track system. The fell locomotive has an additional motor to drive the two horizontal pressure applied geared wheels against both sides of the center rail.

The Fell engine has a wheel arangement of 0-4-2T with a total adhesive weight of 62 tonnes enabling it to pull a weight of 65 tonnes up a steep grade of 1 in 15 at walking pace. Five engines in one consist was commen, the resulting steam engine sound was amazing.

A total of six fell engines were used on the Rimutaka incline for near on eighty years before a tunnel put an end to the operation in 1955. The 1 in 15 incline worked was only 4.8km in length. The operation time being about 20 minutes. One fell engine Number H199 is preserved at Featherston's Fell Museum.
